BBC - LEGENDS NEVER DIE
February 2022
BBC Three documentary Legends Never Die explores the lives and careers of Lil Peep, XXXTentacion and Juice WRLD, three of the biggest hip-hop stars of Generation Z who all died by the time they were 21. Why did this happen, and how much did the 24/7 gaze of 21st-century fame play a part in their deaths?
I designed and created the motion graphics that feature in this documentary that explore the lyrics of these artists, the internet universe, and the highs and lows that eventually lead to the tragic deaths of these young rappers. The energy and role of the internet was integral to the documentary, so we needed to create a character through internet language and grammar. Sequences needed to work individually and as a collective.
I created a visual language that featured psychedelic backdrops, treating footage with trippy distortions, to using abstract patterns formed from bands of colour that could either blend into lyrics or be used to represent various topics. Visuals were inspired by the side effects of taking drugs, such as distortions of perception, experienced by all three rappers in their own indulgence.
